2011 Competition Rules and Guidelines
Balboa
Both 'pure' balboa and bal-swing are permitted during the balboa
competitions.
Shag
All styles of vintage shag (i.e., 'collegiate' shag) are allowed in the strictly competition, but the shag jack and jill will be limited to only double-rhythm shag (i.e., the six-count shag basic that includes two 'slows' and two 'quicks'). Feel free to incorporate any two-count, four-count, and eight-count moves, but to keep the contest fun for everyone, please limit your basic to double-rhythm. All four shag rhythms (single, double, triple, and long-double) are permitted in the strictly.
The Jack and Jill Competitions
We will have a jack and jill competition for both balboa and shag. Contestants don't need a partner to participate; each person will be matched with someone at random. In the preliminary round, every competitor will be given three songs, each song with a different partner. Those who make it through to the final round will dance with a single, randomly-selected partner to DJed music. The final round will be an all-skate (all finalists on the floor).
The Strictly Competitions
We will have a strictly competition for both balboa and shag. You must have a partner to enter these competitions. If you make it through to the final round, you and your partner will be given a spotlight dance to live music!
Registration
Contestants need to register as individuals (even for the strictly competitions). If you register online, a member of our team will contact you to finish the registration process. You may also register at the front desk when you sign in for the weekend. Contest sign-up ends at 1:00PM on Saturday.
Prizes
Trophies will be awarded to the top three finalists in the jack and jill and strictly competitions. The top two finalists in the strictly competitions will also receive a cash prize.
Other Requirements
- To compete you must be registered for the entire weekend.
- A brief competitor's meeting will be held at 5:45 PM on Saturday. All competitors are required to attend.
- There is no limit to the number of competitions one can enter.
- Aerials will not be allowed during the jack and jill competitions, but dips and floor tricks are permitted.
- Dressing up is not required, but recommended.
Shag Competition Judging Criteria
We're aware of the recent concern amongst those in the shag community that improvements be made to the judging criteria for shag contests. So, we put our heads together, consulted some experts, and came up with criteria for our shag jack and jill and strictly competitions.
Please don't let the fact that we are posting contest criteria give you the wrong impression. Our contests actually tend to be pretty relaxed. In fact, our whole event is more like a shag and balboa family celebration than a workshop weekend. So, don't be afraid to smile. Having fun is one of the best ways to shine in a contest.
Judging Criteria
Musicality - dancing with the music is key. One can never be too musical while dancing shag and doing so will definitely help you stand out in our shag competitions.
Technique - as best they can, the judges will assess the lead/follow technique used by the dancers (even during the strictly).
Creativity - presenting new moves that still keep true to the spirit of shag is a great way to promote the dance as well as win points with our judges.
Authenticity - you don't have to be a dance historian to dance shag authentically. What we are looking for here is not a flawless recreation. We just want to see 'collegiate' shag, whatever your preferred style may be. Said another way, we don't want to see lindy or balboa (or some other dance) put to shag rhythm.
Footwork - we encourage clean footwork. Give us some precise, well-executed variations in footwork. That will definitely help you beat out the competition.
Other suggestions
Aerials - doing aerials is not forbidden in our strictly competition, but it's also not considered a key factor for winning. Aerials aren't going to count against you (unless you do them poorly), and you'll probably entertain the crowd. But also keep in mind that this isn't something that we place a lot of emphasis on.
Borrowed Moves - some moves are shared by several dances. The swing-out is one example of this. Tandem dancing is another. However, there is a point at which it becomes obvious that one has temporarily left shag for the sake of incorporating a beloved balboa or lindy move. If possible, try to avoid this. Incorporating moves from other dances is not a bad thing. But you must be willing to alter them considerably in order to make them fit shag technique and aesthetic.
Choreographed Sequences from the Movies - imitating lengthy choreographed sequences (not to be confused with stand-alone moves) taken from vintage clips is not uncommon in shag competitions. But, if you really want to do well in our contests, steer clear of this trend. Show us something new. That's the way to really impress our judges!
